Volunteer Program – 351 Barkly Street, Brunswick

The Volunteer Program at Barkly Street Brunswick comprises approximately 15 volunteers and a coordinator who aim to provide social interaction and support to residents of the Barkly Street high rise public housing estate aimed at maintaining residents’ independence. Volunteer support can include providing residents with individualised services such as looking after pets when people are sick or away, visiting them when in hospital, delivering newspapers to unwell residents as well as keeping an eye on vulnerable tenants. The program also runs several community activities in the building, including bingo, darts, cards and a pool competition which any residents of the building may partake.    In addition, volunteer team runs a food bank every Friday at the building to provide much needed food security to residents of the building and surrounding area. A residents’ barbecue is held after the food bank on the last Friday of every month.
